The Artist, the Teacher, the Art Teacher

my second collaboration with Alison Gerber (Yale, sociology) involves a look at that familiar profession of “the art teacher.” In brief, while the sociological literature has its hands full with the professional lives of artists and teachers, respectively, there is little left in the theoretical toolkit to recognize art teachers.  We blend our empirical projects on visual artists (hers) and music education (mine) to generate some new ideas for recognizing professions as meaningful processes, and not necessarily roles which may be defined as more or less coherent.
